Raise the Roof

Christmas Tree Festival 2024

St Peter’s Christmas Tree Festival
Back by popular demand, the second Duxford Christmas Tree Festival will take place at St Peter’s Church over the weekend of Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th December. As is fast becoming traditional for Raise the Roof events, St Peter’s Ringing Guild will peal out their invitation to the village at the start of the festivities on both afternoons. This year 25 fresh and twinkling trees will decorate the Church from the 14th until twelfth night.  On Saturday, the air will be filled with the scent of fresh Norway spruce, mulled wine, mince pies and live festive music from Duxford’s own acoustic guitarist, Bernard Lee.  On Sunday, enjoy similar sights and aromas, the raffle will be drawn, and the weekend will close with one of our special Duxford community singalongs.
If you haven’t yet done so, £40 will reserve you 4-5ft of fresh Norway spruce and £60 a 6-7ft tree. Email Mary Hoad (maryhoad@icloud.com) or pick up a form from the ‘events table’ just inside the door at the Community Centre. Orders need to be confirmed no later than 4th November.
The programme of events for the Festival is as below:
Saturday 14th December (4.00pm – 6.00pm)
3.55pm             Pealing of the Church bells
4.00pm             Festival opens, with mulled wine, mince pies & raffle tickets
5.15pm             Live festive music with Bernard Lee, Duxford’s very own acoustic guitarist
Sunday 15th December (4.00pm – 6.00pm)
3.55pm             Pealing of the Church bells
4.00pm             Festival continues with mulled wine, mince pies & raffle tickets
5.15pm             Drawing of the raffle (a very generously donated Harrods hamper is the 1st prize), followed by the Community singalong
6.00pm             Festival closes.
Entry to the festival is free but donations will be very welcome.
You don’t need to come to an event to help Raise the Roof, you can donate as much as you would like by bank transfer to the PCC.
Details for donating by bank transfer are: Duxford Parochial Church Council.  S.C: 40-16-08. A/C No: 51380117.  Reference: RoofFund.
Thank you - and we look forward to seeing you at the Festival.

Raise the roof: the backstory

Following the theft of lead from  a large part of the roof in 2019, we planned  to replace the temporary felt roof with terne-coated steel.  With the help of generous grants from the National Churches Trust, Cambridge Historic Churches Trust, the Thalia WB Community Fund through The Landfill Communities Fund (administered by Cambridgeshire Community Foundation), plus the support of friends in Duxford and beyond, this phase of the project has been completed. We are now fundraising to replace the Victorian lead on the main section of the roof which has reached the end of its useful life.

Planning your Visit

A Warm Hello

Here's what to expect if you're coming to Church on a Sunday morning.

Where and When

We meet at one of our three Churches (details here) for our main Sunday Service, which starts at 10am.

We usually serve tea, coffee and biscuits after the service.

Accessibility: There is wheelchair access, and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. Duxford and Ickleton Churches have a toilet.

Children are more than welcome to all of our 10am services, however the services on the first and second Sunday of the month in Ickleton are more children orientated.
